The National Service Scheme(NSS), launched in 1969 during the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, is aflagship Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India under the Ministryof Youth Affairs & Sports. The scheme aims at the holistic developmentof students by involving them in meaningful community service.
NSS provides an extensiondimension to higher education, enabling students to connect classroomlearning with real-life social experiences. It seeks to sensitize student youthtowards the needs and problems of society, particularly in rural and urbanunderprivileged areas, and to develop a sense of social responsibility andcommitment to nation-building.
The core philosophy of NSS is “Educationthrough Service”, which helps students gain practical exposure, leadershipskills, and a deeper understanding of societal issues. Since its inception, NSShas grown into one of the largest youth movements in India, engaging millionsof volunteers in diverse social development activities.
NSS Motto
The motto of NSS is “Not Me, But You”, reflecting theessence of democratic living and selfless service. It emphasizes that thewelfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society,encouraging volunteers to prioritize community needs over personal interests.
NSS Symbol & Badge
The NSS symbol is derived from the Konark Sun Templewheel (Odisha), representing the cycle of creation, preservation, andtransformation, symbolizing continuous social progress.
- The 8 bars of the wheel represent 24 hours, indicating readiness for service round the clock
- Red color signifies energy, enthusiasm, and spirit of youth
- Navy blue color represents the cosmos and NSS’s contribution to mankind

NSS Day
24th September is celebrated every year as NSS Day,marking the official launch of the scheme and promoting awareness about its objectivesand activities.

Objectives of NSS
The NSS unit aims to develop the following qualities among volunteers:

- Enhancing capacity to respond to emergencies and disasters

Structure of NSS Activities
NSS activities are broadly categorized into:
1. Orientation (20 Hours)
- Introduction to NSS philosophy, objectives, and programmes
- Conducted through lectures, discussions, and field visits
2. Campus Activities (Up to 30 Hours)
- Tree plantation, cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns
- Drug abuse prevention, health awareness, environmental protection
3. Community Service (70 Hours)
- Rural Projects: Literacy, sanitation, health, agriculture, women empowerment
- Urban Projects: Slum welfare, health services, environmental campaigns
- Institutional Work: Work with NGOs and social organizations
- Disaster Response: Relief, rescue, and rehabilitation during emergencies
4. National Days & Special Campaigns
- Celebration of national events to instill patriotism and unity
